Precision Rifle FAQ
Optics
Should I get a MRAD Scope or MOA Scope?
This is a personal preference. We'll teach you how to become proficient with either system. GH staff generally favors MRAD for practical applications.
1st or 2nd Focal Plane Scope?
Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but 1st focal plane scopes tend to offer more benefits overall. The choice ultimately depends on your shooting style and preferences.
What Reticle Type is Best?
GH Staff prefers Horus-type reticles (sometimes called "Christmas tree" reticles). These allow for faster holdovers for both elevation and wind calls rather than constantly dialing adjustments. Different manufacturers have their own terminology for similar designs.
Rifles
Bolt Action or Gas-Operated?
Bolt actions are typically known to provide better accuracy for precision shooting applications.
Recommended Caliber?
For the distances we shoot in our courses, we require students to have at least a .308 or larger caliber. Common options include .308 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, .243 Win, and .300 Win Mag.
Equipment Priorities
Limited Budget: Where Should I Invest?
Generally, your scope should be the priority. A common saying is that you should spend more on your optic than on your rifle. Quality glass makes a significant difference in precision shooting.
Do I Need a Kestrel or Chronograph?
While not mandatory, these are useful tools. We typically use a Kestrel once at the start of shooting to measure atmospheric conditions, but rarely use it for wind values. We'll teach you how to read environmental indicators for wind speed estimation.
Ballistic Computer/App?
Not required, but if you choose to use one, we recommend Applied Ballistics software. It's available as "AB Quantum" on both iPhone and Android platforms.
